African Union, Somalia Denounce Attack in Nigeria’s Zamfara State

(MENAFN) The African Union (AU) and Somalia have strongly condemned a deadly assault in northwestern Nigeria’s Zamfara state, which claimed at least 50 civilian lives and involved the abduction of women and children.

AU Commission Chair Mahmoud Ali Youssouf expressed full solidarity with Nigeria, offering “heartfelt” condolences to the victims’ families. The AU statement emphasized its rejection of terrorism and violent extremism targeting civilians, particularly women and children, describing such acts as serious human rights violations and threats to peace, security, and stability.

Youssouf called for the “immediate, safe, and unconditional” release of all abducted individuals and urged stronger, coordinated measures to protect civilians and prevent similar attacks in the future. The AU reaffirmed its unwavering support for Nigeria’s efforts to combat insecurity and restore lasting peace.

In a separate statement, Somalia’s Foreign Ministry echoed this condemnation, offering condolences to families and expressing solidarity with the Nigerian government. Mogadishu also called for the “immediate and unconditional” release of all abductees and backed Nigeria’s pursuit of justice against those responsible.
