Gunmen Kill Twenty, Steal Cattle in Central Nigeria “Bandit” Attack

(MENAFN) Gunmen have killed 20 people and stolen cattle from a village in central Nigeria during what local authorities describe as a "bandit" attack, according to reports.

These kidnappers, often referred to as "bandits" by locals, regularly carry out mass abductions for ransom and loot rural communities.

The latest incident occurred in Plateau state on Friday, when gunmen ambushed soldiers on a routine patrol, the Kanam Development Association (KADA) said.

"In the unfortunate exchange of gunfire that followed the ambush, our nation lost brave defenders who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty," KADA said, noting that 12 security personnel and eight civilians assisting them were killed.

Following the ambush, the attackers raided a nearby village, taking property including livestock. KADA added: "This further compounds the suffering of already vulnerable rural communities," highlighting that villages in the region have faced repeated attacks and kidnappings in recent years.

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, continues to battle insurgency and rising radical Islamist violence, with military efforts complicated by the presence of multiple armed groups across the region.
